Project Objectives
Lumber mill operators traditionally stress grade timber after it has been cut, by which time it is too late to change cutting decisions. The objective of the Hitman LG640 project was to design an extension to the Hitman family of products that could provide a method to assess stiffness of the logs prior to processing to allow optimal production batching of logs for lumber or veneer.
Our Approach
The environment of use in a mill is harsh and demanding. The design team needed to ensure that the processor would work reliably, accurately and quickly on logs that could be conveyed in either longitudinal or transverse directions. FEA analysis was applied to components and structures.
Outcomes
The processor measurably improves the operational efficiency and increases profits of mills, and has created new industry benchmarks for waste minimisation, better managing valuable natural resources.
